Talk about learning to stroll! It has taken me over a week to get used to not having to get up in the morning and head to work. Let's be honest, I'm still not used to it. Some of you may be saying "I wish", but it's a lot harder than you think. I wake up and realize I don't have to do anything this day. 3 months of nothing necessary to do?! I have to do something!
So, what have I been doing with my new lazy days? We started out spending two days with Matt's Tia Ligia and Abuelita...where I ate way too much! In one morning I had 7 arepas. They are so good!
| Oh, here's the view from our room with a TINY peak of the mountains. |
There is a huge convention center next to us, and there was a food and culinary exhibit this week. YUM!!! It was actually fun to see, but there weren't enough free samples...c'mon people! Matt and I did enjoy some delicious ceviche and some pig intestine stuffed with rice and peas. Mmmm.
Earlier last week we went to a place called Bogota Beer Company. They have some interesting beers they brew...good, but not better than Sweetwater or Yazoo back home. Some of the best food I've had has been with Matt's family. Nothing beats homemade! There's a delicious pastry shop around the corner...I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time there!
My Spanish is getting better....slowly. I understand more than I can say, but with each day I am saying more and more. There's been a lot of staring blankly at some of his family members until I finally get what they are saying and vice versa, but I keep trying anyway. I have managed to successfully take a cab and order food in a restaurant without Matt!
What else...oh, I went to a "family day fiesta" at his 13 year old cousin's school. It was a lot of fun. There was lots of food, games, and some weird local bands. One guy's name was "Baby Daddy"...really? There were children in the crowd! Anyway, the funniest part of it all is that it started raining during the middle of this....not a light drizzle...an actual rain. No one moved...I was looking around at all of them thinking "is this BINGO game really worth staying in the rain?", but they all held their spots and tried to stay dry unsuccessfully with umbrellas and hoods. It rains everyday here...in fact you get all 4 seasons in one day right now. It starts out sunny and cool, then warm, then cold and rainy, then clear and just cold. I really need to carry an umbrella and coat every day. I am getting used to it though.
All in all it's a beautiful place. The mountains to the east are gorgeous, and I can't wait to see more of Colombia!!
